Have you ever been the first person in the gym in the morning? No, not the staff person who opens the doors at an hour that most people think of as the middle of the night. That person is first, but have you ever been next?
In New York, you’re far from being the only one awake at that time of day. There are Wall St ants scurrying downtown to check in on the Nikkei before the other side of the world clocks off for the day. New York slides into the new day, it’s a transition rather than a restart.
The streets aren’t quite as crowded but give it time. The buzz isn’t quite as loud and you can get across town in a reasonable amount of time. The feeling is of gearing up rather than being a full pelt. Except in the gym.
At the Olympic Training Center New York no one is gearing up. The day is in full swing because this is a place that takes training to a different level.
The big difference between you and them?
Chances are it’s the facilities. If your job was to be fit and to train all day, you’d be as fit as a professional athlete. The reality is, your workout is something you fit in before you go to your real job. But if you got to train like an athlete maybe you would take your fitness to a new level.
What about talent?
Well ok, there is a difference there too. But this is New York baby, and who is going to stop you training like a pro, if that’s what you want to do? It is your prerogative as a New Yorker.
